How the Citizens conversion works
- 1. Drop your Citizens Bank PDF — digital or scanned, monthly statement or a combined multi-month export, up to 50 MB (or batch up to 25 files). Password-protected PDFs and image-only scans both work: scans go through vision OCR automatically.
- 2. Parse & reconcile — every transaction is extracted and the sum is checked against ending balance minus beginning balance within $0.01.
- 3. Download XLSX, CSV, or QBO — one click each, or batch up to 10 statements and download them as a single ZIP.
Citizens statement structure and quirks
Citizens Bank personal checking statements split activity into Deposits, Electronic Withdrawals, Checks Paid, and Service Charges. The parser merges all four blocks into a chronological stream, then reconciles against the printed beginning and ending balances — the standard multi-section US retail pattern.
The Checks Paid block lists each physical check by number. We keep the check number in Description so the exported rows line up with vendor ledgers or bookkeeping software that keys on check sequence.
Citizens Cash Back Plus credit-card statements ship on a cycle schedule with standard merchant-category columns. These run through the LLM path and reconcile against the printed new-balance figure per cycle.

Common issues with Citizens PDFs
Format-specific quirks that break naive PDF parsers — and how the reconciliation pipeline handles each one.
2022 rebrand affects older statement template recognition
Citizens Bank rebranded its statement design in 2022, and customers occasionally have older PDFs with the legacy template still in their archives. The two formats use different masthead positions, different section names, and different date formats. The parser detects which template is in use from the masthead signature and routes to the right extraction logic — a multi-year discovery packet mixing pre-2022 and post-2022 statements reconciles uniformly without manual per-file routing.
GreenSense automatic savings transfers flood the activity block
Citizens GreenSense Savings auto-transfers small amounts (typically $1-$5) from checking to savings on every electronic transaction. A typical month produces 30-100 paired entries — debit on checking, matching credit on savings. Naive cross-account analysis that nets internal transfers needs to identify the GreenSense pairs explicitly. The parser tags GreenSense rows with a shared transfer-ID in metadata so net-cashflow reports can collapse the pairs without losing the trail of qualifying transactions.
Quest checking tier interest postings split by qualification
Citizens Quest is a tiered checking product where interest rate depends on whether you met the qualification criteria that month. The statement prints two interest rows when the tier changed mid-month — one at the qualifying rate, one at the base rate, both labelled 'Interest Earned' but for different effective periods. Naive parsers either skip duplicate-named rows or sum the wrong figure. The parser keeps both rows distinct in the export with effective period tags so 1099-INT verification matches the bank-reported total exactly.
Citizens conversion FAQ
- Does it handle the separate Checks Paid block?
- Yes. Physical checks listed by number in Checks Paid are captured with the check number preserved in Description, merged with electronic transactions chronologically, and validated against the running balance.
- Will Citizens One Deposit Checking convert?
- Yes. One Deposit Checking uses the standard multi-section layout — same pipeline as Quest Checking and Private Client Checking.
- What about Citizens Cash Back Plus Mastercard PDFs?
- Cycle-based credit-card statements use the standard US layout; merchant and category extracted via LLM, reconciliation against the printed new-balance figure per cycle.
- Can I batch Citizens Business Checking statements?
- Yes. Drop up to 10 business checking PDFs in one upload — the small-business layout matches personal closely, so the same pipeline applies.

Password-protected bank statement PDFs: how to convert them safely without uploading the password to a stranger
Most banks ship encrypted statement PDFs by default. The conversion is easy when you have the password and impossible when you don't, but the part that matters most is what happens to the password during the conversion itself.
